Helping the Hospitality Sector Measure and Reduce Their Carbon Emissions
The hospitality sector is responsible for up to 15% of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions and the UK Government has set a target for the whole economy to be Net Zero by 2050. Net Zero Now developed The Net Zero Pubs and Bars Initiative in 2021 to help hospitality businesses measure and reduce their emissions. The Initiative is built around the Net Zero Hospitality Protocol - an industry-standard methodology for measuring and reporting emissions from hospitality businesses, developed in collaboration with the industry to ensure consistent interpretation of the global carbon accounting guidelines across the sector.
The Protocol and associated Net Zero Certification Marks enable businesses to unlock multiple benefits including reducing costs, increasing customer demand and engaging staff. The Initiative has over 3,300 venues signed up and is currently managing over 595,000 tonnes of carbon emissions on its online platform. Supported from inception by Coca-Cola Europacific Partners and Pernod Ricard UK, Heineken UK strengthens the shared commitment of the Initiative to help the hospitality sector start their journeys to Net Zero easily and cost effectively.
Collaboration is Key with Net Zero Hospitality Initiative Partnerships
Neil Ross Russell, Managing Director of Net Zero Now, says: “We are delighted that Heineken UK have joined our esteemed partners supporting the Initiative. Whilst we are fully aware of the demands and difficulties pubs and bars have to deal with on a daily basis in this economic climate, we know that plugging into a route to Net Zero will benefit their bottom line as well as having a positive impact on their employees, customers and the planet!”
Will Rice, On-Trade Director, at Heineken UK, said: “The need to reduce energy usage and be more efficient has never been more important for pubs and bars, and we want to play a part in supporting operators to be more sustainable, saving costs as a result. The hospitality sector is responsible for up to 15% of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions and the UK Government has set a target for the whole economy to be Net Zero by 2050.
“Having the tools and resources to do so in the most cost-effective and operational efficient way possible is key, so we’re excited to be able to provide our customers with access to Net Zero Pubs and Bars memberships, increasing quality and efficiency whilst reducing both operational costs and emissions. This is a fundamental step forward, and we’re thrilled to be working with Net Zero Now on this brilliant initiative.”
