Introducing the Legal Climate Forum: Uniting for Sustainable Change

In an era where climate action is no longer optional but imperative, the legal sector is stepping up to play its part. We are thrilled to announce the launch of the Legal Climate Forum, an initiative by Net Zero Now, designed to bring together sustainability leaders from law firms across the nation. This forum will serve as a vital arena for collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and driving meaningful change in carbon accounting and sustainability within the legal industry.

Fostering Collaboration in Net Zero Law Firms

The Legal Climate Forum was born out of a recognised need for sector-specific guidance and peer support in navigating the complex landscape of carbon reduction and sustainability. As the first of its kind, this forum addresses the unique challenges faced by law firms, providing them with climate essentials for their journey towards net zero emissions.

Our inaugural session brought together representatives from leading firms of various sizes and specialities. including Mills & Reeve, Hill Dickinson, Cripps, AMPA, Clarke Willmott, and Macfarlanes. Our range of participants underscores the widespread recognition of climate action's importance across the legal sector.

Key Insights from Our First Meeting

The forum’s first gathering offered valuable net zero insights, highlighting the power of collective thinking and shared experiences. Participants openly discussed their motivations, challenges, and strategies for implementing effective carbon accounting, climate solutions, and sustainability measures.

“Being a member of the Legal Climate Forum allows me to engage with like-minded individuals who understand the complexities we face and share a passion for driving change. Together, we can support each other and share best practices, enabling us to progress collectively and contribute to a more sustainable future for our sector, our firms, our employees, and our clients”, commented Karen Higgins, Head of ESG at Clarke Willmott.

Emily Tradd, Head of Customer Success at Net Zero Now added: “Being part of the Legal Climate Forum is about uniting forces to achieve real impact. The forum’s main objective is to equip law firms with the tools and knowledge needed for effective carbon accounting and sustainability practices. Together, we’re setting a new standard for climate action in the legal sector.”

Driving Forces Behind Carbon Accounting in Law Firms

A common thread emerged as firms shared their impetus for embracing carbon accounting. Client expectations and regulatory pressures were significant drivers, pushing firms towards decarbonisation. However, many participants also emphasised a deep-seated ethical responsibility to address climate change. The urgency of cultural shifts within the firm and the importance of building knowledge in this evolving field were both prevailing themes.

Overcoming Challenges with Climate Solutions

The forum provided and will continue to provide a unique opportunity for participants to voice their challenges and collaboratively explore climate action solutions amongst experts and peers. Data collection emerged as a universal hurdle, with firms emphasising the importance of transparency and stakeholder engagement in their carbon accounting practices.. Practical strategies were shared, from engaging IT teams in sustainable decision-making to implementing regular sustainability meetings and early planning for data collection.

Bridging Knowledge Gaps in Carbon Accounting

A significant portion of the discussion centred on net zero insights and addressing knowledge gaps within firms. The need for comprehensive carbon literacy training was universally acknowledged, highlighting the importance of climate essentials. Participants stressed the importance of making climate action personal and engaging for all employees, moving beyond mere compliance to fostering a culture of sustainability.

Looking Ahead: The Future of the Legal Climate Forum

The Legal Climate Forum is set to become a driving force for sustainability in the legal sector, evolving into a prominent net zero initiative. Through regular meetings, we aim to foster a collaborative environment where firms can share best practices and innovative climate solutions. This peer-to-peer learning will be crucial in developing effective, industry-specific sustainability strategies.

As the forum grows, we envision it becoming an influential voice for climate action within the legal profession. By uniting firms in their commitment to sustainability, we can amplify our collective impact and help shape industry standards.

The Legal Climate Forum represents a significant step forward in the legal sector's commitment to sustainability. By bringing together the collective wisdom and experiences of sustainability leaders, we are creating a powerful force for positive change.
